Introduction to Revision Rhinoplasty

The nose is the face’s focal point, making it a feature frequently targeted for desired improvements. A successful rhinoplasty will aim to improve the function or aesthetic appearance of the nose without causing any disruption or health complications. However, rhinoplasties have a high rate of revisions due to the sensitive nature of this particular surgery. A poorly performed rhinoplasty can result in a less aesthetic appearance at best or, at worst, compromise the nose’s underlying structure and basic functions. This means selecting a highly-skilled, board-certified facial plastic surgeon who can safely and effectively reduce and reverse the damage caused by a previous rhinoplasty is crucial.

At Facial Aesthetic Concepts, Dr. Bryan Brandon and Dr. Richard A. Gangnes offer flexible appointments for revision rhinoplasties in San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, and Rancho Santa Margarita, Southern California. Contact us today to schedule your consultation!

Dr. Brandon, a skilled surgeon, performs a delicate procedure, likely cosmetic or oral surgery. Magnification lenses and precise hand movements are evident as he focuses on the patient's facial area. The clinical setting and advanced equipment underscore the commitment to delivering high-quality care. - Rhinoplasty in San Clamente, Aliso Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

What is a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is a form of plastic surgery that alters or straightens the shape of the nose after a previous rhinoplasty. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and is customized to each patient’s specific needs. Revision rhinoplasty may correct the underlying bone structure, cartilage, skin, or other parts of the nose as needed. Revision rhinoplasty may also improve the basic functionality of the nose by reconstructing the nasal passages and re-sizing the nostrils. In some cases, it may be necessary to reconstruct the nose using grafts or implants.

There are two types of revision rhinoplasty techniques available. Dr. Brandon or Dr. Gangnes may perform a “closed” revision rhinoplasty involving incisions made inside the nose. This technique preserves the nose’s overall functioning without creating additional scarring, resulting in a faster recovery.

An “open” revision rhinoplasty can reshape the contour of the nose. In this technique, incisions are made under the nose at the cartilage. This technique may be necessary for more complicated revision rhinoplasties.

Following complete healing and recuperation, the scars resulting from the surgery are hardly noticeable in both techniques.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the First Step?

Please schedule a consultation with any of the Facial Aesthetic Concepts practices in San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, or Rancho Santa Margarita in Southern California. During your consultation, please be prepared to review your entire medical history, along with any medications or supplements you may be currently taking. This consultation must be transparent so that Dr. Brandon or Dr. Gangnes can receive an accurate picture of your health and potential risks for a revision rhinoplasty procedure.

The consultation is also your opportunity to ask any questions and address any uncertainties you might have about undergoing a revision rhinoplasty. We want all of our patients to fully understand the mechanics of their revision rhinoplasty and feel confident that they are consulting with a highly competent plastic surgeon.

When your questions have been answered to your satisfaction, and you feel ready to proceed, Dr. Brandon or Dr. Gangnes will create a customized revision rhinoplasty treatment plan tailored to your specific nose surgery and needs. You will then be able to schedule your procedure at a later time at your convenience.

What to Expect on the Day of Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

Please follow all pre-operative instructions before arriving for your revision rhinoplasty surgery. To reduce the risk of complications during your procedure or recovery period, you will be advised to reduce or abstain from medications or supplements that may increase bleeding, bruising, or swelling.

When you are ready for your procedure, an anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia so you will not feel any discomfort during the surgery. Your surgeon will then proceed with a closed revision rhinoplasty, open revision rhinoplasty, or some combination of the techniques as outlined in your consultation to assure you receive the desired results for your nose.

Revision rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to return home the same day. Please plan for a trusted friend or relative to transport you to and from the surgery, and ideally, stay for an additional night to assist with household tasks.

Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery

It is normal to experience swelling, bruising, or bleeding for several weeks after surgery. Please follow all post-operative instructions to minimize complications and improve your odds of success.

For the first few weeks following your surgery, rest in bed with the head raised above the chest to minimize swelling and bleeding. You may also experience swelling or bruising around your eyes, but these side effects should be reduced within the next few weeks. You may also experience some nasal congestion, which can be managed with some gauze affixed underneath the nose.

On average, most patients are able to resume their normal routines within three weeks after surgery. Please allow Dr. Brandon or Dr. Gangnes to review your healing progress during your follow-up appointment and clear you for resuming normal exercise and other strenuous activities. You will be provided with a detailed recovery timeline and scheduled for regular follow-up visits to monitor your progress.
