Introduction

Introduction to Chin Augmentation

The size of a chin can fundamentally alter the perception of your face. A weak chin might have an unbalanced effect on the facial profile, or it may not give off a mature, professional appearance for an adult. In these cases, a chin augmentation may boost your appearance by correcting a previously underdeveloped feature.

Our facial plastic surgery team offers chin augmentation consultations at any Facial Aesthetic Concepts location in San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita in Southern California. Discover how a chin augmentation can improve and add definition to your face!

What is a Chin Augmentation?

A chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that recontours the underlying bone structure of an underdeveloped chin with the addition of a chin implant. Any chin augmentation aims to define a jawline better and rebalance facial features. For this reason, chin augmentations are often also considered along with rhinoplasties to better align symmetry.

Either Dr. Richard A. Gangnes or Dr. Byran Brandon, both board-certified facial plastic surgeons, will help you assess and create the appropriate chin implant. This implant will add definition to your face while also creating harmony with your nose and other facial features. It will be molded and shaped along your chin bone to create a natural look.

What Are the Benefits of a Chin Augmentation?

Our patients in the greater Orange County area commonly request chin augmentations for the following benefits:

  • Correcting a weak or underdeveloped chin
  • Enhanced and balanced facial features
  • Improved definition of the neck and jawline
  • Boost in self-esteem

Who Are the Best Candidates For a Chin Augmentation?

Most patients with a weak or recessed chin may be suitable for a chin augmentation. Our surgeons recommend patients receive a chin augmentation if they meet some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Have a recessed or underdeveloped chin with a normal bite
  • Appear to have disproportionate facial features
  • Have a fully matured facial profile, i.e., you are not expected to go through any further growth or changes
  • Stabilized in any weight loss or weight gain but still unable to reduce a “double chin” or lack of definition in the neck and/or jawline
  • Non-smokers

Let’s get started

What’s the First Step?

Please schedule a consultation at Facial Aesthetic Concepts to evaluate your chin for a potential augmentation. We offer flexible appointments at any of our locations in the greater Orange County area, specifically San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, or Rancho Santa Margarita.

When you arrive for your appointment, either Dr. Brandon or Dr. Gangnes will evaluate your chin profile and candidacy for any other corrective procedures that might help rebalance your facial features. They will review your medical history to determine your risk profile for a chin augmentation procedure and provide you with “Before” and “After” photos of previous patients so you may see how a chin augmentation could best improve your chin definition.

If you wish to proceed, your dedicated plastic surgeon will develop a customized surgical plan for your specific chin augmentation needs and help you select the appropriate chin implant that will be molded to your bone structure to achieve your desired appearance. Our surgical coordinator will then schedule your surgery and provide you with pre-operative instructions to prepare you for the day of your chin augmentation.

What to Expect on the Day of Chin Augmentation Surgery

On your chin augmentation surgery day, you will meet with your surgeon and review the surgical plan once more to answer any outstanding questions or concerns. He will then show you your selected implant and demonstrate how it will fit onto your chin.

When you are ready, you will be prepped for surgery. An anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia to keep you pain-free and comfortable for the duration of your procedure. Your surgeon will then make incisions either inside the mouth or under the chin and insert the implant, fitting it around the chin bone. He will then suture the area closed and carefully wrap the chin with a bandage to hold the implant in place.

The entire procedure may take one to two hours, depending on the complexity of the case. A chin augmentation is conducted as an outpatient surgery, meaning you will be able to go home the same day. Please arrange for a trusted friend or family member to provide transportation to and from your surgery, as we do not permit patients who have received anesthesia to transport themselves for their own safety.

Chin Augmentation Recovery

Every patient’s healing process is different, but on average, most of our patients are able to resume their normal work schedule at least one to two weeks after undergoing a chin augmentation procedure. You can manage pain or discomfort with ice packs or over-the-counter medication.

For the first few weeks after surgery, you may experience swelling as your chin adjusts to the implant. Please sleep with your head elevated and face-up to minimize any disruption to your sutures, and follow all Facial Aesthetic Concepts post-operative instructions to ensure a successful and long-lasting result. When you return for your follow-up appointment in three to four weeks, our post-surgical team will evaluate your healing progress and determine whether you can be cleared to resume more strenuous activities.

Please allow any swelling to be reduced before evaluating your results. On average, patients can expect to see their final results about one to three months after undergoing surgery.
