What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to eliminate the dead skin and reveal smoother, newer skin underneath. These are usually performed to treat wrinkles, discolored skin, sun damage, and scars. Chemical peels are usually done on the face, but they can also target other body parts. There are varying strengths of chemical peels. You may need to undergo the procedure more than once with a light or medium peel to get the desired results. Deeper chemical peels offer more significant results but take longer to recover.

Enzyme Peel

Enzyme peels, as the name suggests, use enzymes to eliminate dead skin cells. The main active ingredient is alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), which are naturally occurring acids in fruits and vegetables that can help reduce roughness in the skin and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.

Light Chemical Peel

Our estheticians perform lighter chemical peels, which are excellent options for removing superficial brown spots, improving finer lines and wrinkles, and refreshing the appearance of your skin. This peel exfoliates a tiny layer of the outer skin and results in a rejuvenated glow.

Medium Chemical Peel

A medium chemical peel is stronger than a lighter peel in that it will go a bit deeper than the outer layer of the skin. They will also work on the upper part of your middle layer of skin or the dermis.

Deep Chemical Peel

Deep chemical peels are available through our dermatologic specialists or plastic surgeons for more sun-damaged skin or skin showing signs of aging. Phenol and an assortment of TCA peels are available. These more thorough peels will treat more stubborn brown spots, more difficult skin textural issues, and deeper lines and wrinkles. The peeling is typically completed in 4 to 7 days, with very mild pinkness in the skin resolving shortly thereafter. Given the depth of these peels, they might be performed with a local anesthetic to assure comfort.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the First Step?

Our staff is available for chemical peels Monday through Saturday. Contact one of our three offices to arrange a complimentary consultation with any of our providers. At the initial consultation, we will create a custom treatment plan that can include more than one appointment for optimal results.

If you are receiving a lighter chemical peel to help with brown spots, improve fine lines and wrinkles, or refresh your skin. In that case, you will receive a chemical peel performed by one of our medical estheticians or dermatologic specialists. For more sun-damaged skin or aging, medium to deep chemical peels are available from our dermatologic specialists or plastic surgeons. This type of chemical peel will treat more stubborn brown spots, more difficult skin textural issues, and deeper lines and wrinkles.

Discuss your expectations with your esthetician when considering a chemical peel. For best results, many find that two or three chemical peels several months apart can help achieve optimal results.

As your esthetician drafts your treatment plan, you can take that to our patient concierge for pricing, scheduling, and any pre-treatment instructions.

Some pre-treatment instructions are listed below:

  • Be sure to discontinue all retinol and hydroxy acids at least 3 days before treatment.
  • Avoid exfoliating a week before your chemical peel.

What to Expect on the Day of Chemical Peel Treatment

On the day of your chemical peel in Orange County, your esthetician will welcome you to the practice and get you settled. They will then review the treatment plan again to ensure your comfort.

Finally, the target area will be first cleansed, and then, if needed, especially for stronger peels, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic just in case there is any discomfort. Your esthetician will then
apply the chosen strength of the chemical peel to the target area for a few minutes. This might produce a slight burning sensation, indicating the dislodging of old skin cells. After a noted period, the chemical solution will be removed from the skin, followed by a neutralizing solution to stop the chemical reaction.

The treatment could take anywhere from fifteen minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the treatment area and the depth of your chemical peel.

Chemical Peels Recovery

The downtime after a chemical peel varies and is based on the peel you receive and your skin assessment. Some chemical peels require no downtime, while others may create some “bronzing” with subsequent peeling, which should diminish in 2 to 5 days.

If you receive the ReVitalize Peel, redness and peeling may occur 2 to 5 days after treatment, lasting anywhere from 3 to seven days.

If you receive a medium to deep chemical peel, the peeling is typically completed in 4 to 7 days, with very mild pinkness in the skin resolving shortly thereafter. Throughout the recovery process, you may notice your skin has a bronzed appearance, which is to be expected. If your skin looks bronzed, you can expect light peeling. It’s important to allow ample recovery time and not pick at your skin or peel it.
