What is Heavy Neck?

A heavy neck can result from excess fat, muscle banding, and skin laxity. Genetics, weight changes, and aging all contribute to fullness and loss of definition beneath the chin. Often, the issue isn’t just surface-level—it involves deeper structures that influence overall contours.

Our Approach to Heavy Neck Correction

Creating a defined neckline requires more than removing fat from a heavy neck. True refinement comes from sculpting the deeper layers, tightening muscles, and redraping the skin for natural contours. At Facial Aesthetic Concepts in Orange County, our goal is to restore a clean, youthful angle between the chin and neck without looking overdone.

Causes of a Heavy Neck

What Are Some of the Signs of a Heavy Neck?

Signs of a heavy neck include:

  • Sagging excess skin
  • Stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise
  • Prominent neck bands
  • A double chin
  • A turkey-wattle neck

The Consultation

What’s the first step?

During your consultation at one of our Orange County clinics, you’ll meet with an experienced facial plastic surgeon. He will ask several detailed questions regarding your needs and goals for neck contouring.

Your surgeon will perform a physical examination and may take photos for reference. He will also ask questions about your medical history, including allergies, pre-existing conditions, past procedures, and current medications/supplements.

Using the information he has gathered, he will work with you to create a customized treatment plan for your heavy neck. He will walk you through the steps of this plan in great detail. Questions are encouraged at any time.

Surgical Procedures We Offer for a Heavy Neck

Deep Neck Contouring

Deep neck contouring removes excess fat and lax skin from a heavy neck while also tightening deeper structures. The procedure focuses on making precise changes to the deeper layers of the neck tissues.

Deep neck contouring in Orange County sculpts the neck, restoring a slimmer and more youthful look. It can be used to treat a double chin, a sagging jawline, prominent muscle bands in the neck, drooping neck skin, and more.

The procedure involves creating tiny incisions behind the ear and/or below the chin. The procedure may use liposuction, along with non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is used to address more advanced skin laxity, along with sagging and separated platysmal neck muscles. This is a popular way to reduce the appearance of a heavy neck and restore sculpted contours.

This procedure can include techniques like cervicoplasty to trim away sagging neck skin, liposuction to suction away excess neck fat, and platysmaplasty to rejoin and tighten neck muscles. Your surgeon will customize the operation to suit your aesthetic goals.

Non-Surgical Treatments We Offer for a Heavy Neck

Sofwave®

Sofwave effectively addresses early skin laxity, reduces wrinkles, and subtly improves contour. The handpiece emits ultrasound energy that penetrates the skin and encourages collagen and elastin production.

DVDRF (Radiofrequency) Microneedling

Dynamic Variable Depth Radio Frequency microneedling in Orange County tightens skin and improves crepiness in the neck. This state-of-the-art minimally invasive technique utilizes a combination of micro-needles and radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate the body’s healing process. It is highly customizable and can address the neck tissues at various depths.

Recovery

Steps for Optimal Recovery

Recovery after heavy neck treatment varies depending on whether you underwent a surgical procedure or a non-surgical treatment. Since surgical neck procedures are more invasive, they require a longer recovery process.

During neck surgery recovery, it’s best to focus on the following steps:

  • Rest as much as possible during the first three days of recovery.
  • Wear a post-surgical compression garment to minimize swelling.
  • Avoid bending, lifting, or quickly turning your neck during the first week.
  • Care for your incisions as directed.
  • Take all antibiotics as prescribed.
  • Keep your head elevated at all times, including overnight.
  • Apply cold compresses to reduce bruising and swelling.
  • Return to normal activities in around seven to ten days.
  • Return to work after around one to two weeks.
  • Come in for regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon.
  • Resume all activities after five to six weeks, including exercise and sports.

Non-surgical neck procedures performed at our Orange County facilities can be minimally invasive or non-invasive. After non-surgical treatments, patients typically follow these aftercare steps:

  • Avoid heavy sun exposure.
  • Apply sunscreen regularly.
  • Do not drink alcohol for at least one to two days.
  • Avoid taking NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) for several days.
  • Avoid picking at the skin of the treatment area.
  • Do not apply makeup to the treated areas for one to two days.
  • Avoid heavy exercise, saunas, hot yoga, and steam rooms for two to three days.
