The dreaded “turkey neck” is a common concern among aging men. The appearance of turkey neck is due to a variety of age-related and/or physical changes including loose and sagging skin, excess fat beneath the chin, or bands on the neck that create displeasing contours. A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, can be an excellent option to help improve and correct these problems.

Best Candidates for a Neck Lift
The best candidates for neck lifts are adult men in good overall health who do not smoke and have realistic expectations for their neck lift surgery.
Men who have unwanted excess skin, double chin, poorly defined jawline, vertical bands, and wrinkles and creases in their lower face and neck region may benefit from a neck lift.
What to Expect with a Neck Lift
Neck lift surgery can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on the problem you are trying to address and correct. The time needed for the procedure depends largely upon the amount of excess skin and the amount of necessary changes to the underlying tissue for optimal correction.
The process itself is the same no matter how much excess skin is being removed or corrected. An initial consultation with your surgeon will determine the issues at hand and provide a plan for the surgery. Depending on the extent of your sagging skin, your surgeon may recommend combining your neck lift with a [facelift] to help maximize your results
The neck lift will begin with incisions on the neck or loose skin. During the procedure, excess fat in the neck can be sculpted, redistributed or removed, and tissues underneath the skin can also be repositioned as needed. After this procedure is done, the skin of your neck is re-draped and smoothed. At this time, your surgeon will remove the excess skin and close the incisions with either sutures or skin adhesives.
Your Neck Lift Recovery & Results
Since this is a procedure, you will need to allow yourself some time to recover after the procedure. The average recovery time is 2 to 4 weeks. During this time, swelling and bruising should diminish, and you should begin to see your initial results. However, if your neck lift was also a part of a facelift or another procedure, your recovery time may take longer.
In order to facilitate proper healing and reduce the risk of complications, you will be advised to take work off to allow your body to recover in the most relaxed circumstances. Your surgeon will discuss your post-operative recovery plan in detail before and after your procedure.
Although results can vary, it can typically take up to 6 months for you to experience the full effects of your neck lift procedure. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen as well as using sun protection daily can help to prolong your neck lift results.
